Tenure Information Tenure Track
Department Summary

The Anthropology Department provides a strong liberal arts curriculum aimed at developing well-rounded, informed citizens with strong critical thinking abilities. Department programs also impart skills to students, preparing them for a wide range of professions. The department encourages students to continue on to graduate study.

Essential Duties

The Anthropology Department seeks candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position for a Cultural Anthropologist with geographic expertise in the Middle East and a thematic focus on Diaspora, Immigration, and (Re)settlement Studies. The successful candidate will begin in the Fall semester 2018.

The position involves the ability to teach lower division courses, including ANTH: 216 Peoples and Cultures of the Middle East, and existing upper-division courses in Middle Eastern cultures. The successful candidate will contribute to the department’s efforts to attract a more diverse population to our major. Because the Anthropology Department is starting a Graduate Certificate Program in Applied Anthropology in Spring 2018, the candidate should be able to teach ANTH 508: Applying Anthropology: Solutions to Human Problems with a focus on immigration and associated themes. As the Anthropology Department is also collaborating in the creation of an interdisciplinary Master’s program in Diaspora, Immigration, and Settlement Studies, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to this initiative via Anthropology and related campus efforts, which may include the African Studies Program, the Center for Middle East Studies, the Ethnic and Indigenous Studies Program, the Asian Studies Program, Global Studies, Global Religious Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Childhood Studies.

Bridgewater State University has a 12-credit-per-semester teaching responsibility, supported with significant professional development opportunities and guidance. Faculty members maintain research programs, perform departmental and campus service, and advise majors in the department. Opportunities exist for developing connections outside the university as well as for developing new programs, running interdisciplinary programs, teaching short travel courses abroad, and pursuing research with undergraduates and graduate students, with university support.
